Morton’s Economic Development Council Anticipates Another Year of Job Growth

Morton, IL is a village that has seen a constant rise in the area of job growth in the recent times and the Economic Development Council (EDC) has shown expectation that 2015 will continue the same trend. The Morton Economic Development Council defined its goal as adding additional 150 new jobs on a yearly base.

In 2012, the organization behind Morton, IL economic development saw a job growth of about 145 new job openings. The next year, in 2013, this figure grew to 320 and in 2014 the new job count was about 150.

The EDC’s CEO and Executive director Brian Anderson, who holds the same functions in Morton Chamber of Commerce, declared that the big construction projects on Interstate 74 and the I-155 lead to the fact that some companies chose to wait for their chance to invest in the village mainly due to the bigger opportunity for truck access, which has the potential to impact logistics.

Illinois Department of Transportation states that the construction works on I-155 and I-74 are scheduled to be finalized by 2016.

“With great demographics, a city infrastructure and utilities that are already in place, the land that is available, access to big interstates and a location that is situated right between several major markets, we are expecting to see bigger activity, more investments and creation of additional jobs in 2015 and 2016,” Anderson pointed out in a statement to Morton, IL Mayor Ron Rainson.

When it comes to job growth, the Morton Economic Development Council set a goal of commercial construction that will be worth $10 million per year. In 2012, the same town saw commercial construction worth $12.5 million and in 2013 the same number doubled to $25.2 million. In 2014, the commercial construction spending ended up being worth $18.4 million.

Mayor Rainson underlined that the construction on Interstate 74 might be sufficient to affect the growth in the retail area, but also that the same construction could deliver a “boom” of growth for the village. He stated that he saw some marginal improvements after the construction has been finalized, with fewer people pulling off and using some kind of retail services.

According to him, this is the reason why, if someone wanted to build a new restaurant or a drug store, they would probably wait until the process of construction is over. Rainson is also pointed out the fact that Morton was an award-winning community, describing it also as a fact that can help in retaining business within the same village.

In 2013, Family Circle Magazine featured Morton, IL as one of the 10 best places in the U.S. for raising a family. In 2015, the same village was named No.8 on the NerdWallet.com list of the best cities in Illinois for young families. It’s no doubt that many different Morton, IL businesses are destined to thrive in 2015.
